History and Design
Grote Kroonluchter, which translates to “Great Chandelier,” is located in the Royal Palace of Amsterdam. It was designed and built by German master glassmaker, Wilhelm Friedrich Wendt, in 1889. The chandelier weighs nearly 1,500 kilograms and consists of 72 branches that are adorned with 6,000 pieces of crystal, which were hand-cut in France.
The chandelier is 4.5 meters in height and 2.5 meters in diameter. The branches are crystal clear, and each is adorned with flowers, fruit, and small statues, made of gilded bronze. The centerpiece of the chandelier is a statue of Atlas, holding up the world on his shoulders. The design of the chandelier is a combination of Dutch and French Baroque styles.
Significance and Symbolism
Grote Kroonluchter is not just a lighting fixture. It is a symbol of extravagance, class, and elegance. It has been the centerpiece of countless important events and ceremonies, including the coronation of Queen Wilhelmina in 1898, and the wedding of Queen Beatrix in 1966.

Restoration and Maintenance
Over the years, Grote Kroonluchter has undergone several restoration projects. In the 1980s, the chandelier was thoroughly overhauled, and every single piece of crystal was taken down and cleaned. In 2014, the chandelier underwent another restoration that aimed to restore its original splendor and luster.
Maintaining the chandelier is no easy feat. It requires regular cleaning and upkeep to ensure that its crystals and ornaments remain bright and sparkling. Due to its size and delicate structure, the cleaning process takes approximately two weeks to complete and requires a team of specialists.
